A letter from Carrie Willmore, Principal

Dear Normal Park Parents,

I wanted to take a moment to check in as we move into week three of virtual learning. I know that the transition of your children learning from home and many of you also working from home are difficult circumstances, believe me, I can relate with three children at home myself. We do not want any school work assigned to cause more stress than this scenario already does. Grades will not be used punitively during this time. Our goal for virtual learning at this time, is to keep students engaged in learning and with their teachers.

You may notice fewer assignments this week in an effort to help alleviate some of the student and family stress which balancing virtual learning and normal home life may have created. Teachers will also post multiple, optional assignments to help you and your children prioritize the workload. Having more choice is our goal so that each family and/or student can decide what is best to stay engaged in learning. You may also notice that teachers have scheduled video and zoom check-ins differently this week. This is in an effort to better streamline our contact and communication with students.

I also want to share with you that our museum liaisons have compiled a list of virtual learning expeditions offered by different organizations. To find these virtual Learning Expeditions go to www.normalpark.com and click on the bus for virtual learning expedition ideas at each grade level. This will be available starting Monday, March 30. This is an optional extension activity for your children to explore over the coming weeks. We have also added a few questions to use to guide their learning on the virtual trips. Have fun exploring from your home!

Above all else, I hope that each of you have been able to slow down and find some moments of joy in spending time with one another over these past few weeks. For those of you still going into work each day to do the important work of keeping our community safe, healthy, fed and thriving, a big “Thank you!” Remember that Spring Break will begin on Friday, April 3rd and go through April 10th.

Best to all,

Carrie Willmore

Principal

Fork and Gavel postponed

Dear Parents and Friends of Normal Park,

Due to the announcement by HCDE to close all campuses for the next two weeks, we have made the decision to “pause” the Fork and Gavel 2020 fundraiser.

Also, due to the change and uncertainty regarding the rapidly changing events, we do not feel it is best to continue this effort during this time. When we say “pause,” we literally mean just that. The online auction will be stopped and all of the bidding will freeze where it is today. We will not be able to issue refunds at this time because rescheduling is a possible option but cannot be confirmed until a later date.

At this time we feel we are able to honor the Teacher Experiences which were purchased through the "Buy It Now" option. When school is back in session and we are able to finalize a plan to continue this effort, we will let everyone know more details. We are hopeful that Fork and Gavel 2020 will still be a success.

We also want to thank Tiffany Phillips (Fork & Gavel 2020 Chairperson) and the entire dedicated, creative committee for all of the work they have done for the past year. They have a great event planned and we hope to be able to see the result of this hard work when the time is appropriate. Thank you for your understanding.
